Ask An Engineer

You asked. We answered! Check out how our engineers answered some of your most frequently asked questions. (Looks like a lot of you want to know about car seats!)

Q: How do the safety features of the new Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible stack up to that of other convertible car seats currently on the market?

First off, all child restraints sold in the United States have to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 213 (FMVSS 213) requirements, which fall under jurisdiction of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A few of the features that add to the safety of our Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible include:

SAFE: Our Shock Absorbing Foam Element device is located below the shell of the SIP 5-70 Convertible. In the event of a crash, the SAFE will crumple in a programmed manner in order to reduce stress on the child’s shoulder and neck.

SIP: The Side Impact Protection head panel protects the child’s head, neck and spine. It easily adjusts to 10 different positions, even when the child is in the seat, to ensure the best and safest fit.

EPS: Energy-absorbing foam, Expanded Poly Styrene, located in the shell and head panel, protects the child’s head and torso from impact forces.

Q: My child is getting old enough that he’s trying to unbuckle himself in the car. Does Peg Perego offer any additional security on its buckles?

Our buckles rely on a force being high enough that most young children will not be able to activate. Smaller children will not have enough strength to push and unbuckle the locking mechanism.

Q: I’ve been researching convertible car seats. I’ve read a lot about shell height and slot measurements. What are the specifications on the Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible, and why do these things matter?

The back height for the Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible is approximately 21 inches with the headrest in the highest position. For a proper fit, the child’s head must be at least 1 inch below the top of the head rest. A larger back height can accommodate a larger child.

There are 10 different harness slot heights on the Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible, which can be adjusted even with the child in the seat. The slot measurements are:

The lower seven positions can be used for rear-facing mode. This allows for a 14.2-inch maximum harness slot height for rear-facing mode. Slot measurements are important because they ensure that the harness is properly adjusted for the child.

Q: We live in a very warm climate. Do any of your car seats come in a fabric that will keep baby cool?

We have upholstered the Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible with our FRESCO Jersey material. This fabric is breathable, easy to clean and absorbs moisture—keeping your child cool and comfortable. The Primo Viaggio SIP 30-30 infant car seat is outfitted with our “Confort Dry” microfiber cloth, which is durable, hand washable and keeps baby dry and allows for proper ventilation.

Don’t see your question? Ask it by commenting below. We’ll do our very best to get you the answers you need. And, if you’re interested in the Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible, stay tuned! Next week I’ll be blogging about my real-life love affair (as a mom of two) with this new car seat.

Prima Pappa Diner and Prima Pappa Best FAQs

A high chair is more than just a place for feeding baby. Oftentimes, it is baby’s first seat in the house. It’s where baby can observe, and more importantly become, a part of your family. Given its significance, it’s no wonder we get a lot of questions about our Prima Pappa Diner and Prima Pappa Best high chairs.

1. What’s the difference between the Prima Pappa Diner and the Prima Pappa Best?

Both high chairs share a lot of the same features–a dishwasher-safe double tray for easy cleanups, non-scratching rubber caster wheels for smooth maneuverability, and seven height adjustments. The Diner comes in our easy-to-clean vinyl, while the Best comes in our stain-resistant, leather-like “Prima Classe” upholstery. The Best also has an adjustable footrest and storage net on the back of its seat.

2. So is the Prima Pappa Best really “best”?

It really depends what you’re looking for. While the Best has a couple of extra features, the biggest difference between the Diner and the Best is the upholstery. The Prima Pappa Diner comes in our easy-to-clean vinyl and features fun, childish prints. On the other hand, with its finely tailored “Prima Classe” upholstery, the Best feels a little more upscale.

3. Can your Prima Pappa Best and/or Prima Pappa Diner be used with a newborn?

Yes. Both offer four “tilt-in-space” recline positions, which are great for when you want to keep baby close during family dinners and get-togethers.

4. How long can my child use the Best or the Diner?

Both the Prima Pappa Best and the Prima Pappa Diner have been tested to accommodate children up to 45 pounds. They both adjust to seven height positions, and the Best features an adjustable footrest.

Pliko Mini FAQs

At only 13 pounds, the Pliko Mini is a streamlined version of our beloved classic Pliko. Wondering if the Mini is right for you? Check out some of our FAQs.

1. Would you recommend the Mini for travel?

Absolutely! Being just 19 1/4″ wide, 40 1/6″ high, and 33 1/3″ deep, there’s not a single train platform, bus terminal, or jetway where the Pliko Mini will fail to move with agility. Plus, with the available Travel Bag (sold separately), it’s easy to take the Mini along on every adventure.

2. Will the Pliko Mini work as an everyday stroller too?

Yes, the Mini is a great everyday stroller. It’s perfect for running errands or taking quick trips around the neighborhood. And, with its astonishingly compact dimensions when folded (just 37 1/2″ in height by 13 1/2″ in width by 13″ in depth), it will easily fit into even the most crowded of trunks.

3. What is the recommended use for the Mini?

The Mini is ideal for older babies and toddlers (up to 45 pounds). Very young infants will probably find traditional strollers like the Mini more comfortable once they have developed better head and neck control (which usually happens between 3 to 5 months). The Mini does not accept a car seat.

4. What accessories are available for the Mini?

With the Mini, there’s an accessory for nearly every season. There’s an available Travel Bag, Rain Cover, Mosquito Netting, and Leg Cover (all sold separately).

5. If the Mini is so “mini,” what features are you sacrificing?

Thanks to good design, not many. We used our 60-plus years of experience designing the very best, most innovative strollers to ensure that the Pliko Mini is the perfect union of comfort and practicality. The Mini offers everything that parents (and children) want:

So, how do you go about finding the perfect product for your baby?

We get asked that…a lot. So to help you get started, we’ve put together this list of frequently asked questions.

Q: Why choose Peg Perego?

A: After more than 60 years of making carriages, strollers, car seats, high chairs, and bouncers, Peg Perego is known worldwide for innovative products that reflect Italy’s most sophisticated style trends. Every step in the process—from engineering to production to shipping —is performed by Peg Perego and no one else, ensuring that all of our products, which are all “Made in Italy,” are of the very best quality.

Q: Help! I’m having trouble deciding between Peg Perego models!

A: With so many great options, that happens! Check out us.pegperego.com for product specifics. Still having a hard time deciding? Look at some of the side-by-side comparisons we’ve done:

What to Buy: Pliko Switch Modular System vs. Skate System

Switch FAQs

1. Is the Switch suitable for a newborn? Yes, if the stroller seat is converted to carriage mode (seat is fully reclined; leg netting is in place), the Switch may directly accommodate a newborn!

2. Will the Switch fit inside the Pliko P3 Travel Bag? The Switch is a bit too big for the P3’s Travel Bag. However, other companies, such as JL Childress, can manufacture bags to accommodate the Switch.

3. Can I get a footmuff/boot for the Switch? There is not a boot/footmuff available for the Switch in the US. This was an accessory that originally came with the Switch when it was introduced to the market. But we have not offered the boot accessory since 2008.

4. How is the Switch different than the Uno? Both strollers can rear- and forward-face. They also convert to carriages. But the main difference between the two is how they do these things.

The Uno has a unique handlebar that swings from one side to the other, allowing the Uno to change from rear-facing to forward-facing without disrupting baby.

The Switch, on the other hand, has a removable seat that can face forward or backward, depending on baby’s preference! This feature also allows the Switch to be a great Travel System option, as the Primo Viaggio car seat (sold separately) directly attaches to the chassis for a lighter, sleeker look.

If you’d like to learn more about their differences, feel free to contact the Online Associate!

Travel System FAQs

1. Are non-Peg Perego brand car seats compatible with Peg Perego strollers? Because we don’t test our strollers with seats other than the Primo Viaggio, we really don’t know the answer to this question. The best thing to do would be to either pose the question on a reputable message board or visit a local retailer to try to see which car seats fit our strollers. But when doing this, we ask that you keep safety a top priority.

2. Will my older model Peg Perego stroller accommodate a new Peg Perego Primo Viaggio car seat? Yes! Many times, even strollers that are very old can still accommodate new Primo Viaggio models. If you’re curious about a certain match, shoot me an email.

3. Will my older Primo Viaggio car seat fit a new Peg Perego stroller? Yes! If it is a Primo Viaggio SIP model, it will fit any of our new strollers.

4. How do I remove the car seat from the stroller’s car seat hooks? Use the same motion as when you’re releasing the seat from its LATCH base. Grab the top of the seat back with your fingers resting on the lever that runs along the back of the seat. Pull up on this lever with your fingers, and the seat will release from the hooks. Then, simply lift the seat out of the stroller seat.

Peg Perego’s 2011 Collection

Each year, Peg Perego’s engineers and designers work alongside the Perego family to develop new products, update existing products, and evaluate current products. This results in a completely new collection that is launched at the beginning of the following year.

Which means our next launch will be in January 2011!

We’re only halfway through 2010, but I’m already receiving quite a few questions about our 2011 Collection. So, in case you’re new to shopping for baby, here’s a snapshot of what will go on:

1)     Peg Perego’s 2011 collection will be introduced at the ABC Trade Show in October. Until then, I won’t be able to share any information on the collection, since our engineers and designers will continue to make final tweaks and decisions right up until the show. If you have questions about the collection, I encourage you to check back with the blog in October!

2)     Once the collection has been introduced, I’ll post about it on this blog. My posts leading up to the January collection launch will primarily be focused on highlighting both new and updated products. I’ll also be able to begin fielding questions from you!

3)     As is true every year, the collection will include new fabrics! This means we’ll have new colors and fabric designs for our baby products. The new fabric collection will be available on nearly all of our products (one or two products may carry over the 2010 fabric collection, while others may be available in select fabrics from the 2011 collection). So, even if a product doesn’t see a model update, it will have new fabric choices!

4)     Once the 2011 Collection is introduced in October, many stores will take preorders. This is the best way to guarantee that you’ll receive the new product as soon as possible. Though actual ship dates may change, we fill orders on a first come, first served basis. Getting your order in sooner than later is always a great option. And, if the timing ends up not working out, some retailers will allow you to cancel your order or apply it to a different product. (Please check with the retailer on this before placing your order).

5)     As we gear up for the 2011 launch, the 2010 Collection will be retired. This means that we will stop production of the 2010 Collection and begin to manufacture our 2011 products. Though it will still take some months to sell through our inventory, certain fabrics and models may become rare finds. To avoid chasing after an out-of-stock model, it’s best to make your final purchase of a 2010 Peg Perego soon after the 2011 collection launches in January.

Hope this clears up some questions you may have as to how we transition from 2010 to 2011. I’m here if you have any questions, but remember, I can’t say much about the new collection until after it’s unveiled in October!
