Gear for Grandparents

There’s probably no one more excited about your baby’s arrival than your own parents, the soon-to-be grandparents. And if baby will be visiting a lot, it might make sense for grandma and grandpa to get a little baby gear of their own. In honor of Grandparents Day, here are our top picks for new grandparents:

An easy-to-store high chair. Our quick-folding high chair, the Prima Pappa Diner, is perfect for grandma’s house. It boasts easy-to-clean vinyl upholstery, our much-loved dishwasher-safe double tray, and non-scratching rubber wheels that make it easy to move and store away. And like all of our high chairs, it comes fully assembled and ready to use. The Prima Pappa Diner also offers a tilt-in-space seat (suitable for even newborns), which is a nice feature when you want to keep baby close during family dinners.

A lightweight stroller. Peg Perego has a number of lightweight strollers, but our favorites for grandparents are our full-featured Vela Easy Drive and Si. Both are incredibly lightweight (just 15.8 pounds each), travel system compatible, and easy to fold and transport. The Vela Easy Drive features a single, one-hand push handlebar, while the Si features two adjustable handles.

A safe, up-to-date car seat. Safety experts strongly warn against used car seats. “Don’t even think about using the old car seat in the attic or the one you just saw at a yard sale,” Luanne Whitmire, a program coordinator at the Greenville (S.C.) Hospital System Children’s Hospital, tells future grandparents on Grandparents.com. “Car seats expire,” she says. “That’s something even new parents don’t know until they’re told.” Peg Perego’s celebrated Primo Viaggio SIP 30-30, designed for infants from 5 to 30 pounds (or up to 30 inches), is a great option for grandparents. It features a quick-release five-point safety harness with shoulder pads and a fail-safe buckle. It can attach to any of our strollers, making it ideal for on-the-go grandparents.

Another option that is coming this fall is the Primo Viaggio SIP 5-70 Convertible. Since it stays in the car, it will be great for option for grandparents who don’t want to have to carry an infant seat around. And since the Convertible converts from a rear-facing (for children 5 to 35 lbs.) to a forward-facing (for children 22 to 70 pounds) seat, it will last from infancy through the toddler years.

Want to check out some of this gear in person? Use our Store Locator to find an authorized retailer near you. Happy Grandparents Day!

Car Seat Safety Answers

Earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued new guidelines that urge parents to keep children in rear-facing car seats longer—until they reach their second birthday (or until they reach the maximum height or weight for their seat, whichever comes first). With the new regulations came new questions. Here’s a look at some of the FAQs the American Academy of Pediatrics addresses in its latest guide, “Car Safety Seats: A Guide for Families 2011.

1. What if my baby’s feet touch the back of the vehicle seat?
Your child can bend his legs easily and will be comfortable in a convertible seat. Injuries to the legs are rare for children facing the rear.

2. Are rear-facing convertible seats OK to use for preemies?
Premature infants should be tested while still in the hospital to make sure they can ride safely in a reclined position.

3. What should I keep in mind when shopping for a car seat?
The best seat is the one that fits your child’s size, is correctly installed, fits well in your vehicle and is used properly every time you drive.

4. What do I need to consider if I’m getting a used car seat?
Avoid used if you don’t know the seat’s history. Never use a car seat that:

  • Is too old. Look on the label for the date it was made. Check with the manufacturer to find out how long it recommends using the seat.
  • Has any visible cracks.
  • Does not have a label with the date of manufacture and model number. Without these, you cannot check to see if the seat has been recalled.
  • Does not come with instructions. You need them to know how to use the seat.
  • Is missing parts.
  • Has been in a moderate or severe crash.
  • Was recalled. To find out, call the manufacturer or visit www.safercar.gov.

New for 2011, the Primo Viaggio SIP Convertible follows baby from infancy through toddlerhood by converting from a rear-facing (for children 5 to 35 lbs.) to a forward-facing (for children 20 to 70 pounds, or up to 49 inches) seat.

• Adjustable Side Impact Protection (SIP) that is easy to adjust to 10 different positions, even with baby in the seat.

• Three recline positions.

• A wide, padded seat that includes a removable cushion for newborns.

In the News Now: New Child Seat Safety Guidelines

Big news this week in car seat safety. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued new guidelines Monday that urge parents to keep children in rear-facing car seats longer—until they reach their second birthday, or until they reach the maximum height or weight for their seat, whichever comes first.

The new recommendations represent a significant change from the pediatricians’ group’s previous advice from 2002, which advised that age 12 months and 20 pounds could be used as a minimum.

New research has found that children are safer in rear-facing car seats. A 2007 study in the journal Injury Prevention showed that children under age 2 are 75 percent less likely to die or be severely injured in a crash if they are riding rear-facing.

Peg Perego’s premium infant car seat, the Primo Viaggio SIP 30-30, is the ideal solution for transporting infants and young toddlers who are between 5 and 30 pounds or up to 30 inches. The thoughtfully designed car seat, which doubles as an infant carrier and is travel system compatible, exceeds the most stringent safety standards in the world, including Euro NCAP Side Impact Protection (SIP) tests. A removable cushion for newborns, an adjustable 5-point harness, and an SIP safety system that can easily be adjusted as your baby grows makes it a great, safe choice for baby’s first years. To find a retailer new you, check out our Where to Buy online tool.

Another option that is coming this year is the Primo Viaggio SIP Convertible. New for 2011, the Primo Viaggio Convertible car seat follows baby from infancy through toddlerhood by converting from a rear-facing (for children 5 to 35 lbs.) to a forward-facing (for children 20 to 70 pounds) seat as baby grows. The seat also has an adjustable SIP system and includes a specially shaped, removable cushion for newborns. It’s a great option for parents who want all of the safety and style of the Primo Viaggio SIP 30-30 in a convertible. Check back for release dates and availability information.

Still have questions? The AAP has a great Car Seat Guide for parents.
